at first glance the giant buddhas, etched in the hillside of luoyang, make one marvel at the engineering involved in such an accomplishment – from such a long time ago.

on second thought one marvels at artistic gifts required, and years of practice required, in rendering such benevolent expressionism from material that offers only one chance at the designed outcome.
